About Us

Somewhere Safe to Go

While some victims seek shelter, many more suffer in silence, unable to leave due to financial dependence, fear, lack of resources, or simply not knowing where to turn. For many, the choices in front of them leave no good option –staying in an abusive relationship or fleeing to homelessness.

Crisis Center of Comal County is here for you. As a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, our mission is to embrace survivors of crisis and trauma and empower them to positively change the trajectory of their lives.

How We Help

More than a shelter, we give victims the support they need to escape and heal from abuse. Our comprehensive services save lives. We are dedicated to wraparound care, addressing immediate and long-term needs for recovery and self-sufficiency.

We meet individuals and families where they are with personalized care to diminish the impact of trauma.

Our goal is to empower our clients to change the trajectory of their life and their family’s future - breaking the cycle of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Our Beliefs

  • All survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and homelessness deserve a place where they feel safe.

  • A collaborative system of care is needed to make a sustained impact on trauma survivors in our community.

  • Individuals and families affected by trauma deserve resources and support in their time of need.

  • Meeting people where they are helps reduce the impacts of trauma.

Our Values

  • GROWTH -We embrace a growth mindset, encouraging the development of ourselves and others.

  • PROTECTION - We value and prioritize the safety of ourselves, our clients, and our community.

  • ACCOUNTABILITY - We stay true to our word and take pride in the services we provide.

  • EMPATHY - We care deeply, modeling compassion in all our interactions.

  • RESILIENCE - We are passionate leaders, embracing adaptive strength to persevere through adversity.

Our Story

In 1986, local citizens began a grassroots effort to address the needs of those experiencing domestic violence. Our volunteer-led organization provided information and referrals to other service providers in the area. With the help of grant funding, we grew to include several paid staff and an emergency shelter. We added a sexual assault crisis services program to serve Comal County.

In 1994, we built a six-bedroom full-service emergency shelter. As the number of clients increased, we began to provide services to men, and our name changed to Crisis Center of Comal County. In 2000, the shelter was expanded to nine bedrooms with office space to provide additional services.

In April 2022, the Crisis Center of Comal County lost its emergency shelter and residential facility due to a fire. In August 2022, a temporary shelter location was secured in New Braunfels to continue to providing services. Since then, we have purchased land and have begun building a new facility with an anticipated opening date of late 2025.

Our 2024 Impact

Crisis Center of Comal County Shelter Resident

“I was in a very abusive and toxic relationship for the past year. I couldn’t live with my parents anymore. My family loves and supports me, but I couldn’t live at home. We all agreed that the best place for me to be was in a shelter. Here, I have a safe place to sleep and meals to eat. They helped me secure a job. Staying at the Crisis Center allows me to save money so I can transition to being on my own. I am doing really well.”
